Canal boat hire in the UK costs more than a budget city break and less than most people assume, once you understand what it covers. There are only two additional costs. The first is fuel. A deposit is taken at the start of your hire and you’ll be refunded for the fuel amount not used. The second is for your food. As a self-catering holiday, you can pack your favourite ingredients or pick up groceries from local villages on your journey.
There are no lock fees and no licence required. Most moorings across the UK’s canal network are free, too. There should be signs around if you end up on private moorings where you may have to pay. The boat’s Canal & River Trust licence is held by ABC Boat Hire.
A week’s canal boat hire with ABC Boat Hire costs around £959 in low season and upwards of £2,899 in peak summer for the whole boat and facilities. The price covers the entire boat for your group, not individual berths, so the more people travelling, the better value per head.

The summer season can often cost around 50% more than the same boat in October. But you can’t put a price on longer days on the water, mooring up next to bustling canalside pubs and soaking up the sun at a slow pace. There’s a version of this holiday that works for everyone’s budget.

A 3 or 4-night canal boat short break in the UK costs from around £688 in low season and upwards of £2,099 in peak summer, for the whole boat. Short breaks are the ideal way to try a canal boat holiday for the first time without committing to a full week.
Short breaks run from Thursday to Monday or from Monday to Friday. They cost less in total than a week’s hire but slightly more per night, as the handover, tuition and preparation times are the same.
A short canal boat break is an ideal first trip if you haven’t been on a narrowboat before. It’s an overall lower cost and shorter commitment, and you’ll know by day two whether canal life is for you.
Just as hotels charge for fresh linen, attentive service and a quality experience, a canal boat holiday’s price reflects similar standards. A hire narrowboat is a fully maintained, insured and licensed vessel. The price bundles accommodation, transport, handovers and on-water support into one figure. And it’s typically competitive with mid-range hotel rates when booking in groups.
For a group of four, that £1,400 summer peak price works out to around £50 per person per night, with a kitchen, bathroom or two, your own floating living room and the British countryside as your view. Most hospitality can’t offer that.
The cheapest time to hire a canal boat is at the start or end of the season, typically April to May and September. ABC Boat Hire’s season runs from mid-March to mid-November, with plenty of opportunities for seasonal offers. Bigger groups, Tesco Clubcard vouchers, off-peak bookings and the Easy Pay instalment option all help reduce the overall cost.
Canal boat holiday prices vary by season, boat size and availability, as well as any seasonal discounts. A few other things worth knowing.
ABC Boat Hire doesn’t run holidays during winter, simply because it’s too cold and the Canal & River Trust tend to schedule maintenance as canal traffic is lower. Spring (April to May) and early autumn (September) tend to be good sweet spots for good prices, comfortable weather and most canalside facilities are still open.
A 6-berth in low season divided between six adults often works out cheaper per person per night than a mid-range hotel room on a European break.
