The third time we have hired a narrowboat from ABC Boat Hire and the third time we have hired a Grebe class. Prepared and equipped to the usual high standard. Our first time on the Kennet & Avon and it is that which is the reason for only 4 stars. Very congested with moored boats from Hilperton down to Bath, we had to cut a day off our itinerary because of reduced speed, furthermore many 48hr/72hr moorings were occupied by boats that had pretty obviously been there longer and one was even blocking a water point and had been there for 4 days. So we only just made it back inside the week to go up the Caen Hill Flight and down again. This was mid-May so I dread to think what going in the holidays would have been like. None of this is the fault of ABC Boat Hire but if if I were doing a week again, I'd skip the Bath bit. East of Hilperton was better but even then Devizes had the same mooring problem. Other than that, the boat was good, even if it was an earlier version of the Grebe, well equipped and the handover/return was quick and efficient. One last thought - do not allow fenders out in locks (yourself or the other boat sharing the lock) and always have someone on the paddles. Another boat almost sunk us in 39 on the flight by ignoring that rule.

Thank you for your feedback, which we will forward to the Canal & River Trust. The majority of our customers do cruise to Bath and back over a leisurely 3 night break, mooring before Bath Top Lock and walking in to the city. Customers who have 4 nights do have time to cruise in to the centre of Bath without any time issues. We would not recommend combining the route in to Bath and the 4 night Caen Hill & return route over the course of 7 nights. The whole experience was good but I cannot state excellent. Mainly let down by limitations of the busy wharf and teething issues with a new boat which when ironed out will give the Savis Warbler an excellent rating.

The staff at Goytre were very friendly and helpful . Nathan gave us clear instructions and directions on managing the challenges of the Brecon and Monmouth. It's a great location and a beautiful canal.

Despite a year's delay because of Covid, ABC kept in touch and made it easy to rebook. We've stayed in a lot of AirBnBs, and the kitchens are always lacking something, sometimes a LOT of things. So, I brought all the things I'd bring for any other self-catering holiday. What a waste! The best equipped kitchen ever. The only thing i didn't find was a pizza slicer! The only reason the rating for the boat below is less than perfect is because we were short three crew (Covid restrictions, again). A 60' boat is a bit big for two people!

Thank you for your feedback. We do ask customers to check the weed hatch each morning to ensure that there isn't any debris caught around the propeller. Generally this shouldn't be a difficult task but if customers are struggling then they can always contact the marina for advice.
