Your recent holiday on Kestrel - Common Kestrel from Gailey Wharf

Lovely holiday despite cool damp weather. The canal was quiet and so peaceful. We saw kingfishers several times, moorhens, ducklings and herons. Everything on the boat was in a good state of repair and we had no mechanical problems. Really appreciated the central heating!

Your recent holiday on Derwent - Hermod from Gailey Wharf

Unfortunately we had to get a member of staff out to the boat, to sort out the non existent heating,they came as soon as possible and it was fixed.did spoil the holiday to begin with,but fortunately we were not too far away.staff were very friendly and boat was very well equipped and beds comfy, so lovely we could bring the dogs too.lovely weekend.

Well laid out boat which handled well. Efficient and helpful staff who helped resolve my flat tyre issue on our return to the base. Despite popularity of Llangollen canal it was quieter than expected.

Love this type of holiday. Busy as you wish to make it, countryside by canal is so relaxing. Need to be able to work together as a team. Even though we had some problems with our boat we made the most of it, we were not going to let them spoil our holiday.

Over the years, we have booked over 30 holidays with ABC boat hire and on the whole have been very happy. On the odd occasion, when there has been a problem, it has always been resolved. However, without doubt, some ABC boats are now starting to look and feel their age. Sadly some of the boats are shabby and in need of a complete refurbishment. . These comments are levelled at those who are responsible for the quality of the boats certainly not the staff who take the bookings or the boat yard staff....they did everything they could to ensure that we had a nice holiday. Whilst I understand that hire boats sometimes get rough treatment, this is the start of a new holiday season ... when everything should be at its best. Perhaps ABC management should remember that there are other holiday companies and some of them offer much smarter boats!

Your recent holiday on Weaver - Cape Weaver from Wrenbury

From the booking process until the time we vacated our boat, all the staff we had dealings with were friendly, informative and very efficient making all aspects hassle free. Our boat was very clean, in excellent condition and with many storage spaces. Little things, such as the practical welcome pack and good quality mooring ropes made a difference.

Your recent holiday on Swallow - Red Sea Swallow from Goytre Wharf

The Mon and Brecs is a lovely canal with few locks so not too strenous but although plenty of water, the the canal is very low in places and it is easy to get grounded especially when passing other boats. The boat itself was very clean and well maintained although the layout was not the usual front or rear lounge and didn't seem to have the storage we have had before.Would certainly recommend.

Your recent holiday on Wren - Marsh Wren from Hilperton

We were impressed with the price of a very last minute booking, less than 48 hours in advance. The boat was what we expected as we had used ABC many times in the past although not for a few years. The boat was well presented and equipped to a good standard. I would have given 5 stars but for the following reasons. The first evening the water pump to the shower worked only for 15 seconds or so before triggering the breaker which then had to be reset before repeating the exercise again and again. To be fair when I phoned the next morning, an engineer came out whilst we were working the Caen Hill flight of locks and made a temporary fix to allow us to continue with our holiday. Great and immediate response and I would not have penalised the score if that were the only problem. We subsequently found that water from the shower was penetrating through to the carpet in the corridor outside - we concluded it probably needed a new seal. The third night onwards we could not get a signal on the tv in the saloon although we could in the cabin and we discovered that the box through which the aerial was plugged had broken. This did not mar the holiday unduly as after many years experience of boating holidays we had bought dvds to watch. The tv in the cabin had a yellow line running vertically through the picture. One of the helmsman’s waterproof jackets provided had no zip fastener. The staff were very pleasant and helpful but did not have much knowledge of the canal outside the immediate area. We were advised that due to strong currents between Bath and Bristol we could not travel beyond Bath but were unaware there was a similar situation at the other end of the canal which I mentioned. I had been longing to do the Caen Hill flight of locks for years so we happily set off in that direction, met with another boat and had a great 4 hours in the sunshine working through all the locks on Sunday. I always worry when we meet huge numbers of volunteer lock-keepers as most of them have far less experience than us and do not follow the instructions of the captain ie the person in charge of the boat often resulting in the boat being thrown about in the locks and wasted water resources. Especially so, when they see we are just two crew and hire-boaters on top. We normally politely refuse any offers given the opportunity and whilst some smile and accept our decision, others act affronted and almost aggressive in their response. This happened on our return down the Caen Hill locks. Some even assume that you want help and dive straight in without asking at all which is upsetting. Part of the fun of the holiday for us is to use the locks and we actively seek out routes with large numbers of locks so we have many of these confrontations.

It is a shame that you had some issues with the showers although it does sound as if Hilperton were quick to respond and make a temporary fix until your boat could be returned to the Marina. Your comments about the televisions and the jacket have been forwarded to Hilperton so that they can rectify these issues ready for our next guests. We have also asked the Marina Manager to speak to the Waterways Manager for the Kennet & Avon about how the Volunteer Lock Keepers operate with our hirer's, it is important that you are given the opportunity to refuse any help if you want to experience the locks yourselves.
