100 canal locks to honour Captain Tom

19th April 2021

In light of the unfortunate passing of Captain Sir Tom Moore – who raised almost £33m for charities supporting the NHS during his last year – his family have encouraged people to take on a “100” challenge of their own.

This challenge will fall on the bank holiday weekend – between 30th April – 3rd May – as this would have been Tom’s 101st birthday. The family, especially his daughter Hannah Ingram-Moore, is encouraging any participants to raise money for their own charities during this time, while taking on their own “100” challenge.

"I really hope people see this [100 challenge] for what it is, which is an absolute chance to bring joy, put money back into charities and support the Captain Tom Foundation, which after all is the legacy of hope that he's left us," she said.

So, what “100” challenges can people choose?

”100” challenge with ABC Boat Hire

Some of the ideas which have come about from this momentous campaign have been walking 100 steps, scoring 100 goals, baking 100 cakes or writing a 100-word poem.

However, here at ABC Boat Hire, we have a great idea: travelling through 100 canal locks.

Our variety of featured canal breaks would be the perfect choice – as these breaks are usually slighter longer, meaning there is enough time to complete the 100 locks challenge. However, it should be noted that this might mean that you’re travelling for longer than the bank holiday weekend itself – but this is a perfect chance to utilise the May bank holiday break, and raise some money for charity in honour of Sir Tom’s extraordinary work.
