The boat was nearly new and was very good with some reservations. The little corner washbasins in both lavatories were more designer than practical, Quite why they were mounted partly under the side deck was a mystery as there was plenty of room towards the middle of the boat. Washing ones face resulted in most of the water flooding the floor as you could not get your face over the basin ! The battery capacity was limited in spite of the LED lighting. Most previous boats had 4 batteries and could easily run the central heating which was needed a couple of nights without running the engine. Cooker was excellent. It is strange how different various similar boats are in handling. Lochan Ora liked going fairly slowly. At speed it was difficult to keep a straight course, being rather edgy. Nicely fitted out apart from silly washbasins. Electric Loos the best ever and worked perfectly in spite of being made in Italy ! Union Canal was much more lined with trees than I expected. Pity there is not the usual Collins Nicholson Waterway Guide as Maps much superior with mileages clearly shown. Water tank appeared to be a bit small, but perhaps the Gauge was pessimistic.( Something we have never had before)

Perfect weather in early-June, gorgeous scenery, and a comfortable narrowboat from ABC Boat Hire all made for a most enjoyable holiday along the Llangollen Canal. One can never reasonably expect the seven days of sunshine and warm temperatures we experienced. The landscape - - not one unpleasant sight! - - was no surprise: we cruised the expanse 10 years ago from the same Whitchurch base, albeit then under different ownership. This occasion was all the better owing to the vessel, easily the best-fitted one we’ve had in five different hires spanning 45 years. We were gobsmacked to learn that this spotless, up-to-date craft was four-years old. Inside was everything we ever needed, including a couple of rather obscure kitchen tools. Some took awhile to locate owing to the impressive number of storage spaces cleverly scattered throughout the craft. Whatever apprehension we had in taking on such a responsibility was quickly dispelled by Ed, who provided a low-key, yet comprehensive instruction on boat operation and safety before we set off. Every company employee we met or otherwise conversed with on the phone was amiable and helpful.

Overall we really enjoyed the holiday. Boat was nice to handle, and very reliable. The boat needs seats at the rear, for passengers to also sit. Beds very uncomfortable, they need new mattresses. Table in dinette needs shortening, as we found it difficult accessing the fixed bench seat.

Great holiday, first time canal boat holiday and would definitely do it again. People on the river were so friendly and some lovely scenery and nice pubs. Next time would find a route with a town to go through en route. The boat was a little tired as had obviously been in service for a good number of years. But this didn’t stop our enjoyment. We phoned the engineer twice during office hours re a pump noise which we wanted to have turned off as kept us awake all night (water pump every 3 minutes really loud for those in front cabin). No call back, but we managed to find the switch to turn it off through the night - would have been handy to know that on handover and not very reassuring if we had had a real technical problem. We were 20minutes late returning the boat (which we apologised for) and had an officious/curt greeting from the marina staff, even though I had stripped all the beds and had got the towels together for the cleaners. So saved them at least that amount of time. All in all would certainly recommend this type of holiday. We are family of 4 (children both 11..great age for them to help with the locks and not be too worried about them falling off the boat).
