Booking the holiday was easy. Explanations during handover were thorough. Wren is a lovely sized boat for 2 people. It was clean and warm. The engine ran well. The downside was that neither the gas oven or grill worked, only the gas hob. And although there was a vacuum cleaner there wasn't any attachments.

We felt so comfortable after the hand-over instructions. All six of us pitched in and communicated well, and we did our daily and nightly checks to ensure safe travels. We did not need to call for help, but felt comfortable enough with Richard to do so if we needed assistance. We planned and researched months in advance. Our expectations were high. Our trip, with six women on an 8 by 69 foot narrow boat, exceeded anything we could have imagined. At ABC, Kate, Richard, and Len gave us lots of information and encouragement. We headed out in a storm, but the weather and our skills improved quickly. We had a most amazing adventure. We maneuvered through locks, bridges, tunnels, aqueducts, and turned the boat around at Llangollen. We stopped at pubs, castles, and nature walks, and everything on the boat worked perfectly. Again, six women and two bathrooms, we cooked for each other, refilled our water tank, checked our engine levels, cranked down the propeller lubricator, only got stuck once, and removed rope and plastic bags from our propeller. We all participated: two out on the front, warning the pilot of upcoming boats and blind curves, and even sent scouts before a tunnel. We moored on bollards, piling clips, and mooring pins we hammered into the shore. Everyone we met, from fellow first-timers, live-aboards, to locals on the street, were wonderful, but even with their help, we never learned how to pronounce Welsh words. Next trip will be a loop or even a one-way. Thank you ABC Whitchurch Marina, for an unforgettable journey!

Efficient booking, and instructions on when to pick up the boat, good quality boat and excellent hand over from Kings Orchard Marina. Able to purchase an excellent guide book with maps of West midlands canal network. A cheaper local map would help keep costs down. The boat was clean and tidy with some signs of wear of the fabric and bed linen due to age. Unfortunately one of the crew suffered an accident on the tow path. A passerby (a crew from a different unrelated boat) gave poor advice to stand on a moving rope, the advice was shouted as a command, and S stood on the moving rope with both feet and was then upended as the boat and rope drifted out from the tow path. S suffered an injury to the left hip. We were assisted by passers by, and travelled back to the marina, finishing our holiday one day early. We reported the accident on arrival at the marina, and then after handing over the boat, drove home to Devon. The receptionist on duty checked with either a manager by telephone or head office and was informed that no paper work was required. We attended our local A/E in Exeter to rule out a hip fracture, and unfortunately an impacted fractured neck of femur had occurred which required surgery - a total hip replacement. In retrospect I think staff training should be given to a} complete an accident form (which might be helpful in documenting the circumstances and for any insurance purposes), b) to advise seek professional medical help as soon as feasible.
