Wir hatten richtig Glück mit dem Wetter, da 10 von 13 Tagen trocken und sonnig waren. Bei üblichem schottischem Wetter könnte die Freude etwas gedämpft sein, da das fast 18 m lange Boot von hinten im Freien ohne Dach gesteuert werden muss. Außerdem ist das Steuern des Bootes durch 90° Kurven und schmale Durchfahrten recht anspruchsvoll, obwohl weder Führerschein noch Vorkenntnisse verlangt werden. Route und Zwischenstationen müssen vorgeplant werden. Diese Art von Urlaub ist auf jeden Fall etwas für wetterfeste Leute, die das Abenteuer lieben. Da die Kommunikation mit Basis, Schleusenpersonal etc. immer mündlich, viel telefonisch, erfolgt, sollten mindestens 1 oder 2 Leute sehr gut Englisch sprechen und verstehen können. Letzteres ist beim schottischen Akzent nicht ganz einfach. ;-) Auffallend ist die Aufgeschlossenheit, Freundlichkeit und Hilfsbereitschaft sowohl des Personals als auch der einheimischen Bevölkerung. Begrüßung zwischen Personen auf dem Weg entlang des Kanals und Bootsbesatzung ist Usus. Klare Empfehlung, sofern man sich als dafür geeigneten Urlaubertyp sieht.

Die Ausstattung unseres Bootes war komplett, das Personal sehr freundlich, hilfsbereit und pragmatisch wenn es mal ein kleines Problemchen zu lösen galt. Nach der 1. Woche Glasgow und zurück Zwischenstopp an der Basis mit Nachtanken, Entleerung der Abwassertanks und Frischwasser auffüllen. Dann 2. Woche Edinburgh und zurück.

We left from Whitchurch to Llangollen and back and it was a really great route, especially being rookies and it was our first trip. The boat was very nice and the route and views were stunning. The staff at Whitchurch marina are absolutely top notch and they made the trip as smooth as it could have gone.

A week was perfect for a leisurely return trip to Trevor, through the tunnels and over the aqueducts twice. We didn't do big days and had a full rest day at Ellesmere.

We was complete novices, when we booked our weekend away, we was advised which size boat would suit our requirements. On our arrival day, we was promptly booked in & given advise & additional information about weekend, shown maps & a brief of the locks & canal etiquette. We was then handed over to Richard whom talked us through the whole boat & showed us what we need to do each day & self help if we get stuck. He went through all parts of the boat inside & out. The boat was perfect, we had such a wonderful experience, apart from a mishap with a tyre (not our or ABC’s fault) but it was dealt with, with great efficiency by Roy. Would we do it again? YES Would we select a different boat? NO Would we try a different area? Possibly, maybe for longer.
