An interesting route to Stratford-Upon-Avon, but hard work, with 55 locks each way. The Birmingham Canal was a bit smelly in places and not as clean as some.

Easy booking. Very helpful staff on arrival gave us clear advice about the boat, along with ideas on where to stop and visit on our trip. We have rented a number of narrowboats from different companies, but this was definitely the best so far. Easy to handle, clean and comfortable with unusual amounts of storage space. Excellent all round.

Positives: The boat was clean and tidy and nicely presented. The layout with the salon at the rear was especially liked, being more sociable for the person at the helm. The staff at Gailey were friendly, helpful and gave a good briefing with just the right amount of information. We asked to return early and that was no problem either. Negatives: The canals are filthy and poorly maintained in places. A lot of time was lost clearing an abandoned duvet tangled in the propeller, a very unpleasant task. We were a long way from base so agreed to try ourselves rather than wait for an engineer to arrive. However there were no suitable tools provided for this purpose, instead we were advised to use the bread knife. It just wasn’t sharp or strong enough for the job. We also concluded it was impossible to properly sterilise it afterwards. The padlock and hasp that secures the entrance is incredibly small and weak and could be easily overcome. This left us feeling uneasy about leaving the boat.

A+ First Class. Everything perfect from initial booking to completion. Website is fantastic with loads of resources. Phone app is great too. The staff at Whitchurch Marina were brilliant, very professional, friendly and helpful. The boat was perfect in every way and the safety training and handover were thorough and informative. Cannot fault ABC Boat hire and will not hesitate to recommend them

Had to do a bit of re-planning during the holiday, due to lock closures. Not a fault of ABC, but one to be aware of.

Both Owl and Lark were well prepared and equipped for our family trip. However, there were no backs to the seating area in Owl which meant sitting up straight. No back cushions could be found by the staff. This meant that the area didn't accommodate the common meeting area we anticipated. Other observations include: a gauge needed for the water quantity; a longer hose for use at Llangollen. The two provided were nowhere near long enough when we had moored in reverse and no means of joining them together; a small drop down table for one bunk on the starboard side of Owl in the stern. Umbrellas..?
