No problems except small marina

My wife and I have just returned from an excellent two week holiday from the ABC base at Aldermaston. This was our seventeenth year of hiring narrowboats, usually via Diamond Resorts. The first week we enjoyed a trip down the Thames to Runnymede, although at times anxious to secure an overnight mooring. The second week we returned to the Kennet and Avon and travelled as far as Hungerford. The particular joy of this week was accountering so many friendly and helpful people, both boaters and non-boaters. This was particularly important when facing some very difficult lock gates. The boat we hired was a cruiser stern, a very poor arrangement as a social area. There is nowhere to sit other than on a cold thin steel guard rail, and then only room for one additional person to the helmsman forward of the tiller. (I never sit and steer). The boat mechanics were good and the steering precise and sensitive. However the interior fittings were tired and long past sell-by date, and storage space barely adequate for two people. The notion that it could sleep five people seems absurd. The bunk bed arrangement in the sleeping area took away valuable space for the person sleeping underneath it. With nowhere to put personal things such as glasses (hearing aids in my case), iPhone, book, handkerchief , etc. Getting into it was hard enough, goodness knows how you do it with the bunk bed down. I doubt very much that the people who configure and fit out these boats have ever tried out their handiwork over a few days and nights self catering. The worst aspect of the boat's poor interior condition was the smelly fridge. When we first entered the boat we were aware of an odour. We quickly traced it to the fridge. On moving it out we discovered the floor underneath was filthy with what could have been spilt food. We managed to effect a bearable remedy by cleaning the floor as best we could. On the plus side the WiFi reception was good and we managed a TV reception most evenings. With regard to the ABC management and staff at Aldermaston we have nothing but praise. The office handover was friendly, efficient and thorough. The engineer/mechanics were extremely helpful, particularly when we called back in at the marina at the start of our second week, providing us with a pump out and fuel top-up. Further praise must also be heaped on them for their superb assistance when I had a serious accident a short distance from the marina which required an ambulance and four days hospitalisation.

A comfortable boat, well fitted out, and beautifully prepared. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff at Wrenbury, though they were extra busy on the afternoon we left, so there was a very slight delay in getting away. Highly recommended, and a memorable and trouble-free week.

The reeds and bank side overgrowth on the Union canal was disappointing and often awkward but this is not the fault of the boat hire company. We loved all the rest of our week in Scotland.
