Our holiday was excellent as we had a great boat, however I do think you should vet more carefully the amount of experience other hirers have. I have been on the canals for over 30years and the conditions with the strong currents from the flooded rivers flowing into the canal at some points especially around Woolhampton lock were challenging to the most experienced boat user. The couple who left in front of us nearly capsized in the lock pound and at one time both abandoned the boat with the wife have a panic attack. Luckily the volunteer lock keeper and one of my crew were able to assist. We carried on and saw the couple later in the week and found they had not moved the next day and had found the whole experience frightening. They had only been on a boat for 3 days the previous year and in his words it was like a mill pond. I think they were very lucky as this incident could easily have resulted in serious or fatal injuries and I would urge ABC relook at their procedures.

The boat was prepared and made available in advance of the advertised time so we were able to make an early start - thank you. Demonstration of the interior features and the operation of the boat was conducted in an efficient, but friendly manner. The boat was generally well presented although there were a few minor nicks and scratches on some of the interior woodwork, but nothing of any consequence. The bathroom is compact, but well laid out. Particularly impressed with the operation and hygienic quality of the toilet, no unpleasant odours, even in hot weather. The exterior paint finish was very smart, but inevitably there were scratches on the main contact points of the hull. On the other hand, it would have been very intimidating to have been the first people to take out a freshly painted boat! If you expect 5 star luxury and comfort a narrow boat holiday is not for you, but if you enjoy being out in the open air and "messing about in boats" then we would recommend ABC Boat Hire.

The overall experience was fantastic. There are small areas that could be improved. The canal is very dirty and needs some attention. Alot of dead animals in the water during our stay that were there also on our return journey. A cat,fish and duck. This is an Avon and kennet responsibility! what a pity its not patrolled and cleaned up. the boat was not as clean as we would have expected. very dirty cupboards. our toilet also malfunctioned which meant we had a boat swimming in 2cm of water one evening, lucky for us it was clean water!

With all of the wet weather we have had recently the Thames has been in flood, resulting in fast flowing water on the Kennet & Avon, which may be why you will have seen an unusual amount of debris in the Canal. Your comments about your boat have been forwarded to the Marina to ensure that the cupboards have been cleaned thoroughly and that the toilets have been checked for any issues. Comfortable, clean boat. Perfect size for two people. Reception and engineering team very friendly and professional. Boat very well equipped. Would definitely recommend from booking to handing boat back. Hassle free.

Well prepared, very clean boat. Excellent pre instructions from house keeping and boat handler. Boat easy to handle for us new comers, now calling myself ‘Captain’! All helped by three days of beautiful weather.
