Where to Go for Alternative Bank Holiday Weekend Breaks in the UK

15th April 2026

Bank holidays are meant to be a break, but more often than not, they mean crowded destinations and higher prices. If you’re looking for a slower way to spend your long weekend, canal boat holidays are the perfect alternative.

Take advantage of four long weekends in 2026 for short staycation ideas in England, Wales and Scotland, swapping airport stress for kicking back in the countryside.

Why canal boat holidays are perfect for a bank holiday weekend

If you’re looking for new bank holiday ideas that actually help you switch off, canal boat holidays offer something completely different. Forget the crowded tourist destinations and extortionate package holidays. Take things at your own pace instead and spend your weekend in blooming greenery with the canal wildlife to keep you company.

They’re a flexible alternative to typical bank holiday plans because you can shape the trip around exactly what you want. Are you after a slow, peaceful escape from the workweek? Or are you looking for something more hands-on?

Canal boat holidays work so well for bank holiday weekends because they combine a different pace of travel and a solution to travel across the country and rest your head in the same place. You also:

Because these breaks are just a few nights, it’s the perfect way to try canal boating for the first time or even experience a new staycation without committing to a full week.

CHECK AVAILABILITY FOR BANK HOLIDAY DATES

So, what does a short canal break look like?

Our canal boat routes are designed so you’re not cruising all day, so you’ll have plenty of time to de-stress and take it easy on the water. Across our 43 short break routes, you’ll typically be cruising for around four to six hours per day, giving you the perfect balance of time on the water and time to explore the waterways.

Easier routes

If you’re looking to properly switch off over the bank holiday, there are eight routes for easy, laid-back cruising with fewer than six locks or no locks at all.

You’ll be steering your narrowboat for between three and four hours per day because of this, meaning more time to moor up for a long lunch at local pubs or head out for bike rides in the local area.

Are bank holiday breaks on a canal boat suitable for beginners?

Yes, short break canal boat holidays are perfect for beginners because lock-free routes offer a taster of trying something new without committing to a full week. You receive a full handover guide, too, of how to steer, moor and use locks, if your route includes them.

What happens if it rains on a bank holiday when I’m on a canal boat?

A bit of rain won’t ruin your trip. Our canal boats are fully equipped for British weather, with covered areas and comfortable indoor spaces where you can relax, cook, or play games. Because your narrowboat is also your hotel and travel, you’re not tied to a strict schedule, so you can adjust your plans when the weather improves.

Do I need a licence or experience to drive a canal boat?

No, you don’t need a licence to handle a canal boat. All the training is provided before your trip, and the boats are designed to be easy to handle at a slow pace.
